Should I Wax or Shave?

Should I Wax or Shave?

We understand that hair removal is an intimate experience. The process of determining which method can be daunting. Let us ease your buzzing mind and lay down the facts about waxing and shaving once and for all. We’re going to outline the pros and cons for each hair removal method, and crown a winner.

Shaving Pros

Shaving is by far the most common method for hair removal and it is easy to understand why.

  • It’s cheap. You may reuse a razor blade many times.
  • You can do it in the shower.
  • There’s no need to wait for your hair to grow out.

Shaving Cons

But even for experienced shavers, you know it is not always a walk in the park. In fact, shaving can be downright inconvenient at times.

  • Nick and cuts can occur in a steamy shower, and razor burns are a thing.
  • Hair regrowth can appear coarser and darker. The hair is merely sliced over on the top.
  • Re-growth results in uncomfortable stubbles and the dreaded ‘prickle leg’.
  • It doesn’t last very long. You’ll stay super smooth for about a day.
  • For females some areas should not be shaved at all: Upper lip and face.
  • Shaving creams can contain skin irritants such as isopentane (a degreaser that breaks down sebum & oil on your skin).
  • Natural shaving creams are expensive.

Waxing Pros

While waxing bars are gaining more popularity these days, many of us forget that we can also easily wax at home. It will take some practice. But once you’ve got your technique down, you will be reaping these benefits in no time.

  • Hair removal is long lasting, you get smooth clean skin for weeks.
  • Waxing can be faster than shaving, especially for smaller areas.
  • Waxing is clean and hygienic. No need to worry about bacteria living in your razor blade.
  • It’s satisfying. Once you’ve tried it, zipping hair away wax strips to reveal ultra smooth skin is a satisfying process.
  • Your girlfriends will be impressed with your DIY beauty skills, and you will feel like a beauty ninja.
  • Your boyfriend won’t tease you about prickle legs.
  • Hair gets finer (not coarser) over time. When hair is removed from the root, the hair grows back finer and sparser.
  • There is a type of wax for all areas of your body (and we mean everywhere).

Waxing Cons

But waxing does come with its own challenges.

  • Waiting for two weeks of growth. Waxing works best when hair is a quarter of an inch (1cm long). This gives the wax something to grab onto.
  • Some people experience temporary redness of skin. It goes away quickly, we’re talking mild skin redness for 20-30 mins after waxing.
  • And yes, it can hurt. It is different for everyone, as it depends on your hair type, the area you are waxing and your own body. But it becomes easier every time and waxing pros describe it as similar to ‘removing a bandaid’.
  • Technique takes practise. Especially with liquid waxes, it’s important to carefully follow the instructions to get the best results.

The Winner: Waxing

What is our verdict? Waxing. We firmly believe that the benefits of waxing outweigh everything else. You really can’t beat skin that stays smooth for weeks longer than shaving.

We don’t talk about it very much, but everyone has it. There’s nothing wrong with it nor is there anything shameful about it. We should normalize it, and whether you choose to keep it, natural, groom it, or remove it should be entirely up to you and nobody else!
