Getting It Right: Hard Wax Vs. Soft Wax

Getting It Right: Hard Wax Vs. Soft Wax

If you've visited a salon for waxing or researched the perfect at-home wax, you've probably heard about "Hard Wax" and "Soft Wax". You’ve probably even wondered:

So what’s the difference between a Hard Wax and a Soft Wax?

Well, one difference is the format of the wax. Hard Waxes are “hard” to the touch – so just like candle wax, they’re solid at room temperature. To use a Hard Wax, you’ll first need to melt the wax, which is why Hard Waxes are also sometimes called a “Hot Wax”.

Soft Waxes, on the other hand, are “soft” at room temperature and just like honey, they’re soft and spreadable. Although both Waxes are highly effective, each has its own method of application and removal.

Hard Waxes are applied in a thick layer, in the direction of hair growth. As the wax cools, the Hard Wax “entraps” and “wraps” the hair. No strips are needed since the Hard Wax itself is pulled off or peeled to remove the unwanted hair.

With Soft Wax, the process is a bit different: the wax is applied in a paper-thin layer and in the same direction as hair growth. Next, an epilation strip is applied to remove the wax and unwanted hair. What is similar about both processes is the importance of keeping the skin taut during both the application and removal process.

Which Wax Should I Use: Hard Wax or Soft Wax?

Choosing the right wax all depends on your hair type and the area you’re waxing. Hard waxes are recommended and most efficient for smaller areas such as the bikini or face. A Hard Wax is also the ONLY wax recommended for a Brazilian. Coarse hair got you done? Short, stubbly hair, the bane of your existence? Try Hard Wax as this is the best match for thick, short or stubborn hair.

Although Soft Waxes can also be used for coarse hair, they’re better the legs or body since they’re faster, easier and more efficient for larger areas. Parissa Warm Wax is an ideal all-purpose wax that rivals any Soft Wax you’ll find in a salon. For precision waxing in areas like the brows, the Parissa Brow Waxing Pen puts the quality of a salon wax in an applicator format perfect for brow shaping & maintenance.

If sensitive skin is your concern, consider a Sugar-based Soft Wax. Sugar Waxes are super gentle and the preferred method for people with ultra-sensitive skin. There is even a USDA certified organic option!
