Facial Waxing: Everything you Need to Know

Facial Waxing: Everything you Need to Know

It’s time we have the talk about facial hairs. We all have them and sometimes they’re downright unpleasant to deal with. Juggling everyday life while keeping your cool is difficult enough. How to remove your facial hair shouldn’t be one of life’s stresses. Parissa Wax Strips and Parissa Hot Wax are great options for hair removal on the face, keep reading for the details.

Different options for dealing with hair on the face; shaving, waxing, bleaching.

So you have decided to get rid of that pesky fuzz or whiskers. What are your options?

  • Shaving. Not recommended. This causes prickly stubble on your face, potential transfer of bacteria from the blade. The shape of razors heads are just not fit for small features like your upper lip area.

  • Bleaching. Apply harsh chemicals to your face is never a good idea. Not to mention the hair remains, it has simply changed colour.

  • Waxing. The best option by far and here is why:

No stubble and long lasting results. This is the only option that means you stay smooth for weeks. Greater precision, you can easily control exactly where the wax goes. Less hair growth over time. Your hair will grow back softer, weaker and sparser because the hair is being removed from the root.

The best Parissa wax to use on your face, Wax Strips, Sugar Wax or Hot Wax?

While all our waxes can be used on the face, each has its special attributes. Every Parissa kit comes with detailed instructions. Technique is key to achieving the best results. Waxing instructions differ for our Washable (sugar based) vs. Salon (resin based) waxes. The below is just an overview, be sure to read our full instructions before waxing.

Parissa Wax Strips: Parissa Wax Strips are a great option for touch-ups on the face. There are smaller sized wax strips (Parissa Wax Strips Face & Bikini) for general use on the face, and even mini sized ones for the brow area (Parissa Brow Shaper Wax Strips).Parissa Wax Strips are the easiest type of wax to use. They precisely apply the perfect amount of wax for instant hair removal. Simply press-on and zip away for salon results.

Parissa Sugar Waxes: These are Parissa Organic Wax or Parissa Chamomile Body Sugar. A great option for facial waxing, these sugar based waxes are  gentle on sensitive skin. They’re also water washable, which makes clean-up a breeze. Apply a paper thin layer in the direction of hair growth. Press on fabric strips and zip away.

Parissa Hot Wax: Parissa Hot Wax is a no-strip salon strength wax hair remover that’s perfect for gently lifting away short, coarse hair in sensitive skin areas like the face. Parissa Hot Wax firms as it cools and ‘shrink wraps’ around all hairs even the short coarse ones, making it super effective for facial waxing. Apply a thick layer in the opposite direction of hair growth. Wait for the wax to become firm and no longer tacky to the touch. Peel the edge and then quickly zip away the wax.

Sorry, but don’t wax if you are using medications that affect the skin.

This applies to oral or topical skin treatments. Skin care medication can sometimes causes the skin’s natural exfoliation process to speed up. This may result in thinner skin. Since the skin is thinner, skin lifting can be more likely to occur when waxing. Therefore, we do not recommend waxing while using any medication that affects the skin.

If you are currently using any skin associated medication, we advise you to consult with your dermatologist to see if waxing is a good fit for you.

Hormonal changes can cause coarser facial hair in mature women.

We are all used to the peach fuzz that regularly frames our upper lip. But there is another type of facial hair that occurs in women, especially for mature ladies. Peach fuzz, also known as vellus hair can turn into darker, coarse hair known as terminal hair. This happens because higher levels of dihydrotestosterone (DHT) hormone occur during menopause. This “beard-like” hair can grow in the chin, jawline, cheeks and forehead regions. While it is perfectly normal to experience this new hair growth because of hormonal changes, it can also be upsetting when it appears.

Doris J. Day, MD, clinical assistant professor of dermatology at New York University Medical Center said “Though a significant minority of women of all ages have coarse dark hair growing on their chin and upper lip because of a genetic predisposition, most women who have excess facial hair have an underlying hormonal issue”. We recommend Parissa Hot Wax as it’s gentle on more fragile and mobile aging skin, while grabbing all hairs including short coarse ones.

Be gentle, and always do a patch test.

We advise a patch test for all our waxes. This is especially important for facial waxing as the skin can be more sensitive than other areas of your body. A patch test means checking for allergies, apply a small amount of wax to the skin and wait for 24 hours. If no redness or irritation occurs it is safe to use. If you’re still not sure after reading our instructions, please get in touch with the waxing specialists here at Parissa.
